U.S. Centre Land Office - receipts issued by the Register, 1857.

When public lands were sold at auction the purchaser received a receipt from the Receiver of Public Lands confirming that a down payment had been made and a receipt from the Register of Public Lands confirming that application had been made to purchase land. This series consists of copies of receipts issued by the Centre Land Office Register, John Cunningham. Each receipt includes the following information: receipt number, date, name and county of residence of the purchaser, location of the land, number of acres and price per acre. Each receipt is signed by Cunningham and contains a statement confirming the agreed price and number of acres bought. These records provide information about the process of buying public land and about the work of the Register of Public Land.
